How I got into Nursing
Some may say it’s a calling, and others, divine intervention. For me, it was as simple as making a choice. A choice of a career that succumbs to corporatisation and competition, or a life fulfilled with compassion and confidence. I chose the latter.

Most Exciting
Resuscitation. I feel alive and drawn by it – the sudden adrenaline rush, the heightened alertness, followed by the sense of achievement when a patient stabilizes.

Area of Work
Nurse Manager (Medical Ward)

How I got into Nursing
It was my ambition since I was young to be a nurse. My impression of nurses back then was actually quite scary because my interaction with them happened during the Health Check in school :). But somehow I know that they helped people when they are sick.

Most Exciting
Nursing has given me the opportunity to go to places where help is really needed. I had the opportunity to go to Banda Aceh to help the Tsunami victims and most recently, I went to Myanmar to join in the relief work for the Cyclone Nargis Victim.

How I got into Nursing
I would say that I joined nursing because I felt a calling to want to help someone and in doing so, bring happiness and hopefully change their lives. By this, taking care of my sick grandmother-in-law is one example. My late grandmother-in-law was suffering from cervical cancer, and the little that I did, in serving her medication and having to listen to what she wanted to talk about, and make her feel happy, made me realize the influence that I can have over someone’s life which money cannot buy.

Most Excitingg
I find great happiness in being able to assist mothers with their newborns. Also, as everything seems so new and unexplored, I readily provide answers to their many questions and also give additional advice as to what should be done henceforth, in taking care of their child after they step out of the hospital. The great enthusiasm, by which they listen, provides me immense satisfaction and fills me with new energy to continue to do my best.

How I got into Nursing
I was admitted to SGH for Dengue fever when I was in Secondary two and there I noticed how the nurses worked very hard to help the sick. That motivated me to become a nurse.

Most Excitingg
I have been involved in all the different aspects of nursing – basic nursing care, clinical nurse specialist, training and education and administrative duties. I enjoy my work as a nurse even more now as it is no longer about being at the bedside of hospital wards, but it’s about providing a service to help patients improve their well-being. The most exciting part of my job now is that I can work on projects towards promoting care for the elderly in the home and in the community as well.
